














Madriguera House
The project sits on a narrow, trapezoidal plot in the village of Madriguera, Segovia, at 1,000 meters altitude, framed by existing stone walls of ferruginous rock, quartz, and slate. The village belongs to the Red and Black Villages of the Sierra de Ayllón, a geologically distinctive area where high iron content gives the soil its characteristic reddish-purple tones — a condition that historically shaped a local building tradition combining soft stone, timber framing, and adobe.
The house follows a single linear layout, chosen for orientation and structural economy, using a uniform beam section throughout and integrating the site's irregular geometry into the roof. This linearity carves out an internal landscape planted exclusively with native species — holm oaks, oaks, fruit trees, rockroses, and aromatics — adapted to the demanding soil and requiring no additional resources through drought or frost. All services are concentrated in a central spine, leaving the remaining space entirely flexible, defined only by furniture.
The house was built with one of the last active local carpenters and a network of craftsmen from neighboring villages. Materials and labor were sourced within a radius of 60 km for trades and 150 km for materials, significantly reducing daily transport and the carbon footprint of the construction process. 80% of the project has been built with sawn timber, considerably reducing carbon emissions, making it a net zero project.
